Third Grade Field Trip to the Oakes Museum

Third grade had a fantastic time at the Oakes Museum at Messiah College on Tuesday, October 6th. We learned about animals of North America and Africa. We also took a nature hike and played a predator/prey game. We thank our chaperones Mrs. Everly, Mrs. Isenberg, and Mrs. Raia for coming with us. We had beautiful weather, and everyone was very well behaved.
It was a great day!
Mrs. Britt, Abby, Tony, Hailey, C.J., and Naomi being chased by all kinds of bears.

Sydney, Ana, Gabby, Cassie, Lauren, and Mrs. Everly visit the pond and the beaver lodge.

Ben, Hunter, Grace, Molly, Hannah, and Mrs. Isenberg with different kinds of sheep and mountain goats.

Jensen, Julia, Breanna, Franchetta, Catherine and Mrs. Raia with the Bison.

Dominik, Jarred, Aaron, Christopher, Nicholas, & Mrs. Cavada making friends with the caribou.

Where'dya get that gorgeous fur, girls??

Before we started our hike, Helena explained what we would be seeing, hearing, and looking for.

The rarely seen "Cassie Bird". Notice the unusual head feathers.

We spent some time looking for animal tracks, and found quite a few.

Helena was telling us about the kinds of trees we would find in the woods.

Looking at the work of some gypsy moths and listening for birds.

This rotting log will eventually turn into dirt.

Naomi, Tony, C.J., Abby, Hailey, and Mrs. Britt found these guys just "hanging around".

Mrs. Isenberg, Hunter, Grace, Ben, Molly, and Hannah with the giraffe. Did you know that giraffes have the same number of neck bones that humans have? Seven!

Catherine, Julia, Jensen, Franchetta, Breanna, and Mrs. Raia with the elephant at the African watering hole.

Sydney, Gabby, Cassie, Ana, Lauren, and Mrs. Everly with the antelope. The antelope on the back left has those markings to make it harder to spot when the sun shines through the tall grasses.

Jarred, Dominik, Nicholas, Christopher, Aaron and Mrs. Cavada with the lions. Did you know that not all male lions have manes? It depends on how close they live to the equator. The lions in this exhibit were all male, but they did not all have manes.

Our last activity of the day was to play a game of predator/prey. Some of us managed to escape, but not everyone did.

What a good looking class! And so well behaved . . .

. . . most of the time. By 2:00, it was definitely time to head back to SJS.
We had a terrific day!!!!
